Prior returns from DL in second game of doubleheader

San Diego at Chicago Cubs, (2nd game)

CHICAGO -- He had to wait an extra day, but Chicago
Cubs righthander Mark Prior will make his season debut on
Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader against the
San Diego Padres.

Activated from the disabled list after recovering from elbow
inflammation, Prior (NR) had his scheduled start rained out on
Tuesday.

An 18-game winner in 2003, Prior has been injury-prone since
then and did not make an appearance in spring training due to
the elbow problem. The Cubs' chances in the National League
Central Division rest largely on his ability to regain his
winning form.

Brian Lawrence (0-1, 2.57 ERA) gets the nod for San Diego. He
was a hard-luck loser in the Padres' 3-2 setback against the
Pittsburgh Pirates last Friday, allowing two runs and seven
hits in seven innings.

Lawrence is 0-3 in his career against the Cubs, but has a 2.84
ERA in four starts.
