Wood, Peavy square off in first of two at Wrigley

San Diego (4-3) at Chicago Cubs (3-4), 1:05 pm EDT (1st game)

CHICAGO -- After a day of rain and a minor adjustment
to the pitching matchups, the San Diego Padres and Chicago
Cubs meet in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday.

Rain forced the postponement of Tuesday's contest and set up
Wednesday's doubleheader that will feature a host of quality
young pitchers.

The Padres' Jake Peavy (0-0, 0.00 ERA), who had the best ERA in
the majors last year with a 2.27 mark, will face Chicago's
Kerry Wood (0-0, 3.18) in the first game.

Both hurlers were strong in their season debuts. Peavy struck
out 10 and allowed four hits in 6 2/3 innings, but did not
get the win in San Diego's 1-0 victory against the Pittsburgh
Pirates last Thursday.

Peavy has a 2.45 ERA in two career starts at Wrigley Field.

Wood was not quite as sharp in a 6-3 loss to the Milwaukee
Brewers last Friday, but made good progress after missing most
of spring training with bursitis in his right shoulder. He
gave up two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings, leaving a
2-2 game after striking out seven.

The 6-5 righthander is 2-2 with a 2.84 ERA in four career
starts vs. San Diego.

The first game of the series was marked by standout pitching as
the Padres took a 1-0 decision on Monday. Adam Eaton yielded
four hits in six innings to pick up the win for San Diego,
outdueling Chicago's Ryan Dempster.

The Cubs' Mark Prior makes his 2005 debut against Brian Lawrence
in the second game of the doubleheader.
