Ward snaps slump in Pirates' victory

MILWAUKEE -- After going hitless in his first 14
at-bats this season, Daryle Ward's first hit could not have had
a bigger impact.

Ward belted a two-run homer in the sixth inning to give
Pittsburgh Pirates their first win in four tries against the
Milwaukee Brewers this season, a 4-2 triumph.

Rob Mackowiak, who tied a career high with four hits, singled to
left to start the sixth and stole second as Craig Wilson struck
out. Ward followed by driving Gary Glover's 1-0 pitch off the
right field foul pole for Pittsburgh's second homer of the year.

David Ross had three hits for the Pirates, including an RBIs
double in the second, which scored Ty Wigginton, and a
ninth-inning homer to center field off reliever Derrick Turnbow.

Pirates starter Mark Redman (1-0) gave up two runs, five hits
and struck out five in six innings, raising his career mark
against the Brewers to 4-1. Jose Mesa retired the side in order
in the ninth for his third save

The Brewers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Junior
Spivey tripled to right, scoring Brady Clark. Spivey scored
moments later on a groundout by Lyle Overbay.

Glover (0-1) worked six innings and allowed three runs and seven
hits. He struck out seven.
