Hooks to leave Beaver, Cuic staying

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State sophomore forward Kenny
Hooks is leaving the Beavers so that he can transfer to another
school closer to his home in Mississippi.

Hooks was granted his release, coach Jay John said Tuesday. If
he chooses to transfer to another Division I school, he will have
to sit out a year but will have two years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-6 Hooks, who is from Moss Point, Miss., appeared in
27 games last season, averaging 2.0 points and 1.2 rebounds in 7.7
minutes.

"He's done a solid job the past two years," John said in a
statement. "He's been homesick at times and hopefully he'll find a
school to play at that will resolve that issue."

The Beavers also announced that 6-foot-10 forward Sasa Cuic is
returning to Oregon State, despite reports that he might return to
Europe.

Cuic, who will be a sophomore next season, is from Rijeka,
Croatia.

Cuic averaged 9.2 points and 3.9 rebounds last season, and was
named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman honorable mention team. In the
first three games he averaged 20.7 points.

"It would be a shame to give up next year. A lot of minutes
will open up and I want to make a bigger contribution," he said.
"I'm willing to step up and take a new role on the team."
