Pittsburgh Pirates Team Report

LHP Mark Redman made his Pirates debut in his hometown of San
Diego Thursday night when he faced the Padres in their home
opener. San Diego was the only team remaining in the majors
that Redman had not faced in his six-year, big-league career.
Redman fared well in his homecoming, tossing six scoreless
innings in a game Pittsburgh eventually lost 1-0 in twelve
innings. ... C Benito Santiago made a homecoming of sorts in San
Diego as well. Santiago broke into the big leagues with the
Padres and won NL Rookie of the Year in 1987. Now 40-years-old,
Santiago is the oldest player on the Pirates, and no longer has
the unusual jersey number 09 that he donned while with the
Padres. Santiago now wears number 34 on his back, to match his
career-best hitting streak in 1987 that still stands as the
longest ever by a major-league rookie. ... The only rookie on
Pittsburgh's roster, Chris Duffy, made his major leage debut
Thursday in San Diego, going 0-for-2 with a strikeout. Duffy
got the call from the big-league club when infielder Jose
Castillo strained an oblique muscle in his first at-bat of the
season.
