Unseeded Zib advances to semifinals at Morocco

CASABLANCA, Morocco - Unseeded Tomas Zib continued
his impressive run in the Grand Prix Hassan II tennis
tournament.

The 29-year-old from the Czech Republic beat eighth-seeded
Christophe Rochus of Belgium, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) in the
quarterfinals of this $416,800 claycourt event on Friday.

Zib pulled off the upset of the tournament on Monday when he
knocked off top seed Rainer Schuettler of Germany and defeated
defending champion Santiago Ventura of Spain on Wednesday.

Juan Monaco of Argentina, another unseeded player, will play Zib
in the semifinals on Saturday.

Monaco rallied to beat French qualifier Gilles Simon, 4-6, 6-2,
7-5 on Friday.

The other semifinal will feature second-seeded Filippo Volandri
of Italy against No. 6 Mariano Puerta of Argentina.

Volandri beat Luxembourg's Gilles Muller, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 in
their first-ever ATP meeting on Friday.

Puerta defeated France's Arnaud Clement, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the
quarterfinals.
