Highlands basketball coach fired

LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- New Mexico Highlands University
basketball coach Ed Manzanares has been fired.

"There's no bitterness," he said Wednesday after being told
his contract would not be renewed when it expires June 30.

"I wish the school and the team the best of luck. I did what I
could there, and now it's time to find something else," he said.

Manzanares led the Cowboys to an 11-17 record last season and
compiled a 43-91 mark during his five-year tenure as head coach.

"There was an evaluation process involved and, as I told Ed,
the only thing I could discuss was this year," said Ben
Santistevan, NMHU interim athletic director.

"I just felt at this point in time we needed to go in a new
direction, that we needed someone else," Santistevan said.

Manzanares was hired as an assistant coach at NMHU in 1996. He
became interim coach in June 2000 when John McCullough resigned and
was appointed head coach in May 2001.
