Be accurate with blades

While a moving, reactive-style is at the very core of spinnerbaiting, casting accuracy and retrieve still rate as critical factors to success. Of these, casting accuracy is the first domino in the line to either create or destroy a successful presentation.

"One of the most common mistakes in fishing spinnerbaits is making an overhand cast. I virtually never use that cast unless my goal is a long, two-handed cast down a grassline or riprap bank," advises BASS pro Ken Cook.

"Typically, the casts made to targets are underhand pitches or roll casts. The object is to make the spinnerbait travel parallel to the water, a foot or two above, entering the water with very little splash. As the bait approaches the water — to soften the entry — you should lower your rod tip to help put the lure down softly. Now, you're in a position to engage the reel and get the blades turning."
