Referee suspected of game-fixing released

BERLIN -- A referee arrested in Germany's game-fixing
scandal was released Wednesday after nearly a month in custody.

Dominik Marks is still being investigated on three counts of
fraud and attempted money laundering, the prosecutors' office said.
Marks had to post bail and surrender his passport before being
released.

He is suspected of fixing three third-division games, one of
which has been ordered replayed by the German soccer federation.
Marks denies all accusations.

He was arrested March 9, making him the second referee to be
taken into custody. Robert Hoyzer, who admitted receiving bribes to
fix games for a ring of gamblers, was held for two weeks in
February.

Prosecutors are basing their investigation on the confessions by
Hoyzer, who is cooperating with authorities. They are investigating
25 people, including 14 players and four referees, on suspicion of
manipulating at least 10 games, mostly in lower divisions.

The three Croatian brothers accused of masterminding the scheme
also have been arrested.
