SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- After a season-opening loss in which
their defense suffered a late collapse, the Los Angeles Dodgers
will try to rebound Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants
at SBC Park.

Behind Jason Schmidt's strong start and Edgardo Alfonzo's
two-run homer, the Giants posted a 4-2 victory over the Dodgers
on Tuesday.

Schmidt allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings,
striking out nine and walking two. He was not made a winner,
however, until a fielding error by Los Angeles third baseman
Jose Valentin in the seventh allowed the go-ahead run to score.

San Francisco added another run in the eighth on a throwing
error by Dodgers reliever Giovanni Carrara, and closer Armando
Benitez locked down his first save with the club with a
scoreless ninth.

After spoiling a strong debut by starter Derek Lowe on Tuesday,
Los Angeles sends Odalis Perez to the mound. The 27-year-old
Perez was limited to just 6 1/3 innings pitched this spring due
to biceps tendinitis and may be on a strict pitch count.

He will be opposed by veteran righthander Kirk Rueter, who
failed to win 10 games for the first time in eight full seasons
with the Giants in 2004. Rueter has 12 career wins against the
Dodgers, more than any other team in the majors.
