Scheduled bout violates WBO rule about title defenses

BELFAST, Northern Ireland -- Joe Calzaghe's WBO super middleweight title defense against Brian Magee was called off Thursday – the day before the scheduled bout – because of a rule infringement.

Calzaghe broke a World Boxing Organization rule that prevents a boxer from making a voluntary defense less than 60 days before an enforced mandatory bout.

Calzaghe was ordered this month to defend his title against top contender, Mario Veit, in Germany on May 7, even though he knocked
out the German in the first round in April 2001.

"As Joe has reigned as world champion for nearly eight years with 15 title defenses, it is a sad situation that he has not been
able to take part in this fight," promoter Frank Warren said.

Veit's German promoter, Universum, said it had no objection to the fight but not for the title.

The bout against Magee was to have been the unbeaten Welshman's 16th defense of his WBO crown.
