Wood, who took himself out of a game this week complaining of tightness in his pitching shoulder, said he could throw from the mound as soon as Wednesday.

He called the exam of his shoulder a precaution.

"It was probably more cautious than it should have been, but at this particular time in spring training, you can't be too cautious,'' he said.

The Cubs sent Wood for an MRI in Arizona before he flew to Chicago on Thursday. The test showed bursitis in Wood's right shoulder and inflammation around the rotator cuff muscles, according to team physician Stephen Gryzlo.

Wood, 27, missed two months last season because of tendinitis in his right triceps. He missed the entire 1999 season
after Tommy John surgery.

Wood said his current ailment is not related to any past injury.

He and other team officials also have said they don't believe Wood is in jeopardy of missing his Opening Day start April 4 at
Arizona.
