BLOOMINGTON, Indiana -- Kathi Bennett, who led
Indiana's women's basketball program to a Big Ten Conference
title in 2002, will call the 2004-05 season her last. On Tuesday, Bennett announced her intentions to resign as coach,
effective at the end of the season. Bennett, who has gone 72-74 in five seasons with Indiana, led
the Hoosiers to a 20-11 record in 2000-01. As the No. 5 seed
in the conference tournament the next season, Indiana knocked
off top-seeded Purdue and second-seeded Penn State en route
to an NCAA Tournament berth. The Hoosiers have struggled to a 10-17 mark, including 3-13 in
the conference, this season. They have dropped their last four
games and 11 of their last 13, falling to ninth in the 11-team
league. "While I have found this experience very rewarding, at this time
I also feel that it is mutually best for myself and for the IU
women's basketball program to go in a different direction,"
Bennett said. "This team has a lot of potential, and Hoosier
fans should look forward to watching them achieve success in the
coming years." No timetable has been set to find a replacement for Bennett, who
has posted a career coaching mark of 296-177 in 17 seasons at
Teiyko Marycrest, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Evansville and Indiana. "In the short time I have worked with coach Bennett, I have seen
nothing but hard work from her players," Indiana athletics
director Rick Greenspan said. "She has worked extremely hard and
we thank her for everything she has done for this program."
