Sting re-sign Staley for seventh season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Sting re-signed three-time
Olympic gold medalist Dawn Staley for a seventh season.

Terms of the deal announced Tuesday were not released.

The 34-year-old point guard -- who also coaches the Temple
University women's team -- has been with the Sting since they
selected her with the ninth overall pick in the league's 1999
draft. She is a three-time WNBA All-Star and has averaged 9.2
points and 5.4 assists while starting all 196 games she has played
in Charlotte.

"We are overjoyed that she will continue to lead the Sting as
we move forward in the rebuilding process," Charlotte coach and
general manager Trudi Lacey said.

Before coming to the WNBA, Staley played professionally overseas
and with the Richmond franchise of the defunct American Basketball
League.

At last summer's Athens Olympics, where she led the American
women to their third straight gold medal, Staley was the flagbearer
for the U.S. delegation at the opening ceremony.

"I began my WNBA career here in Charlotte and fell in love with
the city and the people. I love being here," said Staley, a
two-time national college player of the year at Virginia.

Staley's Temple Owls have won 19 straight games and are ranked
in the Top 25 for the first time in school history.
