Madcap Escapade returns to old form, wins at Gulfstream

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -- Madcap Escapade went to the front
quickly and set a track record in winning the $150,000 Grade II
Shirley Jones Handicap for fillies and mares at Gulfstream on
Saturday.

It was Madcap Escapade's first race in nine months, following a
hip fracture.

The 3-5 favorite, ridden by Jerry Bailey, covered the seven
furlongs in 1:22.06 and returned $3.20, $2.60 and $2.40. Alix M
finished two lengths back and paid $3.60 and $3.00; 20-1 shot D'
Wildcat Speed finished 10 lengths behind Madcap Escapade and paid
$4.80 to show.

Madcap Escapade, owned by Bruce Lunsford and trained by Frank
Brothers, hadn't raced since breaking her hip last year in the
Kentucky Oaks.

"It's always good to get the first one out under our belt,"
Brothers said.

Society Selection, the 4-1 second choice with three Grade I wins
to her credit, stumbled at the start and finished last in the
seven-horse field.
