Stetson signs Waugh to three-year extension

DELAND, Fla. -- Stetson signed Derek Waugh to a three-year
contract extension Wednesday, keeping one of the nation's youngest
basketball coaches through the 2007-08 season.

The deal comes despite the 33-year-old Waugh posting a 51-73
record in his five years with the Hatters, 10-14 this season and
currently ninth in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

However, Stetson is just coming off two years of NCAA probation,
imposed in 2002 for violating recruiting and playing time
restrictions. The infractions resulted in scholarship reductions, a
cut in paid visits to the campus and practice restrictions.

Still, Stetson posted its first win in 21 years over a
Southeastern Conference when it beat Georgia 56-52. Stetson has
never been to the NCAA tournament.
