Soccer-Marseille narrow gap on rivals with 3-1 win at Toulouse

PARIS, Jan 29 - Olympique Marseille snatched a 3-1
victory at Toulouse in a Ligue 1 match on Saturday to narrow the
gap on their rivals in the race for a Champions League's berth.

Laurent Battles and Steve Marlet's first half goals were
separated by a goal from Toulouse's Nabil Taider before Peguy
Luyindula sealed the visitors' win seven minutes from time.

Marseille have moved up to fourth in the league, level on 41
points with third-placed AJ Auxerre, who lost 3-0 at Metz after
second-half goals from Habib Gueye and two from Herve Tum.

Second-placed Lille squandered the opportunity to gain
ground on league leaders Olympique Lyon after they were held to
a scoreless draw at Caen.

Lille had their best chance to score when Caen defender
Cedric Hengbart cleared the ball off the line from a Mathieu
Bodmer close-range shot in the 55th minute.

"I'm disappointed," said Lille coach Claude Puel. "They
(Caen) failed to create a single chance to score while we
managed to produce some great football on a terrible pitch.

"It's sad because we failed to take the points we deserved.
We can say that we were not lucky on our last two outings."

Lille were held to a 1-1 draw at Nice on Wednesday.

"We are playing well at the moment. But we would rather
clinch points," Puel said. "It's the only thing which really
matters in the title race."

Lyon, who have a four-point lead over Lille, have a match in
hand after their game at Bastia was postponed until Tuesday
because of heavy snow.

Fifth-placed Monaco host Paris St Germain on Sunday.
