Munich has foundation from marred `72 Games

FRANKFURT, Germany -- Munich, which hosted the ill-fated 1972 Summer Olympics, plans to bid for the 2014 Winter Games.

Germany's National Olympic Committee will examine a feasibility study done by the city at its next meeting at the end of January, NOC spokesman Michael Schirp said Monday.

Munich's expected bid comes after another German city, Leipzig, was not endorsed as an official candidate for the 2012 Summer Games by the International Olympic Committee.

Munich still has the infrastructure from the 1972 games, including an Olympic hall, and an array of nearby winter sports centers that regularly host top-level competitions.

The 1972 games in Munich were overshadowed by the attack by Palestinian gunmen that killed 11 members of the Israeli team.

The IOC will decide on the venue for the 2014 Winter Games in July 2007.
