Graves promoted to defensive coordinator

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Terrence Graves was promoted to Southern
University's defensive coordinator, replacing Cliff Lewis. Lewis
resigned last month after the Jaguars' defense fell from second
overall to seventh in the 10-team Southwestern Athletic Conference.

"I'm just looking forward to getting out there, getting back to
the style of defense I know we're capable of playing," Graves
said.

Graves was the inside linebackers coach after returning from a
one-year stint as defensive coordinator at Norfolk State. Lewis
handled the outside linebackers. The men were co-coordinators for
three seasons, from 2000-02.

"That should solidify what we're doing," coach Pete Richardson
said. "We'll have the same continuity, which will help us out a
great deal. He knows the defense."

In 2003, Lewis' first season as the sole defensive coordinator,
Southern led the SWAC in scoring defense (15.0 points per game) and
were second in total defense (300.7 yards per game), second in pass
defense efficiency (101.6), third in rushing defense (110.6 ypg)
and seventh in pass defense (190.1 ypg).

Last season Southern was fifth in scoring defense (22.1 ppg),
seventh in total defense (341.2 ypg), sixth in pass defense
efficiency (113.6), third in rushing defense (138.8 ypg) and ninth
in pass defense (138.8).
