INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Sophomore guard Quinton Day scored 21 points
to lead hot-shooting Missouri-Kansas City to its first victory of
the season, a 77-61 win over IUPUI in the Mid-Continent Conference
opener for both teams Monday night.
Three Kangaroos came off the bench to score in double figures:
Mike English had 16 points, Carlton Aaron had 14 points and 12
rebounds and Brandon Temple contributed 15 points.
UMKC (1-7 overall) held just a 31-30 lead after the first
period, but gradually pulled away after halftime, outshooting the
Jaguars 60 percent (18-of-30) to 32 percent (9-of-28) in the final
period.
Day, the Kangaroos' leading scorer at more than 16 points per
game, and Temple each made three 3-pointers, opening up the inside
for easy shots. The Kangaroos outscored the host Jaguars 40-18 in
the paint.
Johnny Miller scored 17 points for IUPUI (6-6 overall) before
fouling out with less than a minute remaining, but he was the only
Jaguar to make more than half of his shots (6-of-9). IUPUI shot
just 33 percent for the game.
