Fultz agrees to $550,000 deal with Phillies

PHILADELPHIA -- Left-hander Aaron Fultz agreed Monday to a
$550,000, one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Fultz, 31, was 3-3 with a 5.04 ERA in 55 games with the Twins
last season, holding left-handers to a .212 average, and 0-0 in
seven relief appearances with Triple-A Rochester.

In addition, the contract of right-hander Aaron Myette was sold
to the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, a Japanese Pacific League
expansion team that starts play in Sendai next season.

Philadelphia also sold the contract of Chris Gomez, a
33-year-old infielder selected in last week's winter meeting draft,
to Baltimore.

Late Sunday, Philadelphia learned free-agent second baseman
Placido Polanco accepted the team's salary arbitration offer, which
makes him a signed player.

The versatile infielder came to the Phillies in the trade that
sent disgruntled All-Star third baseman Scott Rolen to the St.
Louis Cardinals in July 2002. Polanco signed a $3.95 million,
one-year contract last February to avoid arbitration, and hit .298
with a career-high 17 homers and 55 RBIss.

With former first-round pick Chase Utley expected to take over
the job at second base, Polanco will likely be used as a backup.

To make room for Polanco on the roster, the Phillies designated
catcher Michel Hernandez for assignment.

Outfielder Doug Glanville rejected arbitration. The Phillies
have until Jan. 8 to sign him or they can't re-sign him until May
1.
