Hawks tab Georgia native Josh Smith 17th overall

NEW YORK - The Atlanta Hawks, with their second
first-round pick, selected high school forward and Georgia
native Josh Smith 17th overall.

The 6-9, 210-pound Smith is from College Park, Georgia but
played his high school ball at famed Oak Hill Academy in
Virginia and is the best pure athlete in the draft.

Smith burst onto the basketball world as a sophomore in the
summer of 2001 with his Atlanta Celtics AAU team and became a
staple of the summer circuit.

A consensus high school All-American, Smith possesses erratic
decision-making and an errant jump shot. However, he makes up
for it with a tremendous aerial assault that leaves most of his
opponents in his wake and is impossible to guard off the
dribble.

Smith shined in the Roundball Classic and was named the MVP of
the Hoop Summit with a big performance.
