Sunday's Golf Capsules

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. -- Retief Goosen captured his second U.S.
Open in four years Sunday at Shinnecock Hills by taking one putt on
the final six greens and letting Phil Mickelson self-destruct.

In the toughest final round at the U.S. Open in 22 years, Goosen
closed with a 1-over 71 for a two-shot victory made possible when
Mickelson three-putted from 5 feet on the 17th.

The raucous New York gallery was ready to send the Masters
champions off in pursuit of the Grand Slam.

Instead, it was Goosen who picked up his second major, along
with validation as a tough customer under the most stifling
pressure.

Mickelson, who won the Masters for his first major by shooting
31 on the back nine at Augusta National, took the lead with three
birdies over a four-hole stretch.

But he finished 1-over 71 for the day and 2-under 278 for the
tournament.

Jeff Maggert shot 72 to finish third at 1-over 281, picking up a
nice check and valuable Ryder Cup points.

Ernie Els, who played in the final group with Goosen, made
double bogey on the first hole and slid all the way to an 80 for
his worst score in a U.S. Open.

Tiger Wood capped another disappointing major with a 76,
finishing at 10-over 290.<

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Cristie Kerr hit an 8-foot birdie
putt on the 18th hole to win the ShopRite LPGA Classic, spoiling
17-year-old Paula Creamer's bid to make history.

With the tournament on the line, Kerr calmly made the putt to
finish with a 3-under 68. The shot came after playing partner
Creamer missed a 10-footer that would have sent them to a playoff
hole.

Creamer was vying to become the first amateur to win an LPGA
title since Joanne Carner in 1969.

Kerr finished with a three-day total of 11-under 202 to win her
third LPGA title and the $195,000 top prize at a breezy Seaview
Marriott Resort course.

Creamer (69) and Giulia Sergas (71) finished one shot back at
203, followed by Juli Inkster (67) and Mi Hyun Kim (69) at 204.

Denise Killeen, who held a two-shot lead going into the final
round and was hoping to win her first LPGA event since joining the
tour 12 years ago, shot an 8-over 79 Sunday and finished seven
shots from the top.
