1B Howard, RHP Roney take Eastern League honors

PORTLAND, Maine -- Reading Phillies first baseman Ryan
Howard and Erie SeaWolves righthander Matt Roney on Monday were
named Eastern League Player and Pitcher of the Week,
respectively.

Howard batted .556 (15-for-27) with four home runs and 13 RBIs in
seven games. The 24-year-old scored 10 runs and produced a
slugging percentage of 1.185.

On June 7, Howard homered twice and drove in five runs in an 8-0
win over the Akron Aeros. He went 2-for-3 with a double and
three RBIs in a 7-6 loss to the Aeros two nights later and
homered in an 8-4 setback to the Altoona Curve on Saturday.

On Sunday, Howard went 3-for-5 with a double, homer and three
RBIs in a 9-8 loss to the Curve. With that effort, he lengthened
his hitting streak to 10 games and increased his league-leading
home run and RBIs totals to 19 and 53, respectively.

Roney went 2-0 with a shutout and a 1.93 ERA in two starts
during the week.

The 24-year-old Roney allowed three runs and nine hits over
seven innings to beat the Bowie Baysox, 13-10, June 7.

In the second game of a doubleheader against the Harrisburg
Senators on Saturday, Roney pitched a three-hit, 4-0 shutout. He
walked one and struck out seven in his first shutout since June
14, 2002.

Roney, who was a first-round pick in 1998, improved to 6-3 with
a 3.61 ERA in 12 starts this season.
