Weaver takes aim on pitching record

Editor's note: ESPN.com has entered a partnership with Baseball America, who will provide weekly updates, analysis and Friday notebooks on college baseball.

You've got to be pitching pretty well to still be the story of the week despite getting a no decision.

So it goes for Jered Weaver.

The Long Beach State junior righthander won his first 12 starts and seemed like he might just cruise through his next five starts to enter the postseason at 17-0. His final two starts of the year, against Cal State Fullerton and at Miami, seemed to offer the most trouble.

But Weaver allowed a game-tying grand slam to Chris Malec with two outs in the eighth Friday against UC Santa Barbara. UCSB then scored four times in the ninth to send Long Beach State to an 8-4 loss, its first Big West Conference defeat of the season. The Gauchos won the next two games of the series to hand the Dirtbags their first league sweep since 2001.

Weaver allowed four earned runs on four hits and a walk in 7 2/3 innings but struck out 14 batters for the second straight game to bring his season total to 146. He set the school's career and single-season strikeout records in the process, passing Rocky Biddle with 364 career punchouts and leaping over the 133-K barrier he reached as a sophomore to tie Scott Rivette. Weaver has reached double-digit strikeouts 10 times this year and has allowed 13 walks and 51 hits in 95 innings.
Weaver, 12-0, 1.45, still has a shot to tie the NCAA record for most wins in a season without a loss. Jim Gideon of Texas went 17-0 in 1975 and Rice's Jeff Niemann tied the mark last year.

Washington wins wild one

There were some wild games over the weekend, but most were tame compared to what took place Saturday in Corvallis, Ore.

"Oh my gosh, yeah -- especially that ninth inning," said Oregon State shortstop Tony Calderon, who finished with a career-high six RBIs. "I've never seen anything like that ... it was a pretty amazing offensive effort by both sides."

Calderon spoke with amazement about how Washington entered the top of the ninth down 14-13 but crossed the plate 13 times in that inning. The Huskies chewed through three Oregon State pitchers with 11 hits, including four homers, for a 26-14 win in a wild game.

The Beavers had fought back from deficits to tie or take the lead five times before Washington ended all doubt in the ninth. Husky senior second baseman Greg Isaacson, who was hit by a pitch in the ninth and scored the winning run, reached base seven times in the game as he went 4-for-4. He drove in five runs and scored five times, and homered in his second plate appearance in the ninth inning. Junior first baseman Kyle Larson drove in Isaacson with a double during that comeback and also homered in his next at-bat of the inning to finish with six RBIs.

Mound Masterpieces

  • Long Island righthanders John Dooley and Ryan Ekberg combined on a no-hitter in a 4-0 win Thursday against Fairleigh Dickinson. Dooley, a sophomore, started the game but left in the third inning with a sore arm. Ekberg, a freshman, got the final 21 outs, including the last 17 in a row.

  • B.J. Welch threw the fifth no-hitter of the year for Columbia-Greene (N.Y.) Community College. It came in a six-inning, 10-0 win against Adirondack (N.Y.) CC in the second game of a doubleheader.

  • Kansas State senior righthander Jim Ripley struck out 13 Baylor batters Sunday in a complete-game, 4-2 win.

  • Oral Roberts junior righthander Dennis Bigley struck out a career-high 13 batters over eight innings Saturday in a 4-1 win at Valparaiso.

  • Jacksonville junior righthander Dennis Robinson improved to 11-2, tied for the national lead in wins with Jered Weaver and Matt Fox, and extended his streak on consecutive innings without allowing an earned run to 26 in a 3-0 win against Lipscomb on Saturday. Robinson threw seven innings for his sixth complete game and 10th win in 11 starts.

    Sultans of Swat

Texas Tech junior shortstop Cameron Blair hit his third grand slam of the year Tuesday in a 10-1 win against New Mexico. Granny No. 3 set a Texas Tech career record and tied the Big 12 single-season mark. The Red Raiders (31-13, 11-6) have won 14 of their last 16 games.

  • Georgia sophomore outfielder Bobby Felmy drove in seven runs in a 16-6 win against Georgia State on Tuesday. Georgia swept Kentucky and has won nine straight overall, as well as seven straight in the Southeastern Conference.

  • Cal State Fullerton junior catcher Kurt Suzuki reached base in 11 straight appearances this weekend in a three-game sweep of Cal Poly. He recorded nine consecutive hits, one shy of the school record. He leads the Big West with a .442 average and is reaching base at a .545 clip. The Titans took a two-game lead in the Big West over Long Beach State.

  • Birmingham-Southern senior first baseman Connor Robertson became the school's all-time RBIs leader (218) with a sacrifice fly in an 8-7 win against Radford in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader. Robertson also owns the Panthers' career home run mark (51).

  • Wofford senior first baseman Steve Casey set a school record with his 40th career double Saturday in a 3-2 win at UNC Greensboro.
