Nebraska soccer star Jenna Cooper shot to death

LINCOLN, Nebraska - An apparent argument over shot
glasses stolen from a party Sunday resulted in the shooting
death of Nebraska soccer standout Jenna Cooper. She was 21.

According to the Journal Star in Lincoln, the bullet that struck
Cooper in the neck was aimed at her friend, Nolan Jenkins, one
of some two dozen guests at a barbecue.

Jenkins, 22, was standing a few feet from Cooper when Lucky
Iromuanya allegedly pulled a handgun and fired at close range,
Police Chief Tom Casaday told the newspaper.

The report added that the bullet passed through Jenkins' scalp
before striking Cooper. Jenkins was in fair condition Sunday at
BryanLGH Medical Center West, the newspaper stated.

"Nolan and one other man and Lucky were exchanging some harsh
words," Casady told the Journal Star. "Lucky brandished this
handgun, shot Nolan and, in the process, shot her."

Iromuanya was arrested near or at his home on suspicion of
first-degree assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony and
carrying a concealed weapon. Additional charges may be filed.

Cooper was a junior majoring in mechanical engineering. A
standout defender, she started 69 of her 70 games in three
seasons, helping the Cornhuskers to three NCAA Tournament
appearances.

Off the field, Cooper was referred to as "an absolute pleasure,"
"amazing, passionate and enthusiastic about life" and
"unbelievably loving and hilarious" by her coach and teammates.

"The University of Nebraska is a better place because Jenna
Cooper made us a part of her life," athletic director Steve
Pederson said. "Some young people come to campus and leave a
mark that will never be forgotten. Jenna is one of those
people."
