Georgia captures conference golf crown by one shot over Florida

SEA ISLAND, Ga. -- Freshman Brendon Todd captured medalist
honors with a closing 1-under-par 69 to lead Georgia to its 25th
Southeastern Conference golf championship on Sunday -- the most
titles of any team in the league.

The Bulldogs had a closing 3-over-par 283 in the final round on
the 6,885-yard, par 70 Seaside Course at Sea Island Golf Club. It
was good enough for a one-shot victory over the Florida Gators, who
had entered the final round tied for the lead with Georgia.

Auburn placed third with a 19-over-par 859, followed in order by
Vanderbilt 864, Kentucky 866, Tennessee 868, South Carolina 869,
LSU 875, Arkansas 883, Mississippi State 887, Alabama 889 and
Mississippi 902.

Todd, who finished with a 3-under 207 total for 54 holes, became
the 15th Bulldog golfer to claim the individual crown at the SEC
tournament.

Mark Donnell of Vanderbilt and Matt Every of Florida shared
second place at 208. Donnell closed with a 67 and Every had a 71.

"The drought is over," Georgia coach Chris Haack said after
the Bulldogs won the title for the first time since 2001. "To be
able to get another SEC title is great. This just might be what
gets our young team over the hump. Not only did they win the SEC
but they beat the No. 1 team (Florida) in the country. That's got
to help their confidence."
