Loyola of Chicago hires basketball coach

CHICAGO -- Jim Whitesell was hired as Loyola of Chicago's
basketball coach Wednesday after coaching Division II Lewis the
past 12 seasons.

Whitesell replaces Larry Farmer, who was fired last month after
the Ramblers finished with a losing record for the fifth time in
six seasons. Loyola was 9-20 this season and 4-12 in the Horizon
League.

The Ramblers won the NCAA championship in 1963 but have had one
winning season in the past 17 years. Loyola hasn't made the NCAA
tournament since 1985, when it went 27-6 and beat SMU in the first
round.

"I look forward to the challenge of restoring Loyola back to
prominence," Whitesell said.

Lewis finished the season 24-7 and has made five trips to the
Division II NCAA tournament. The Illinois school had 10 winning
seasons under Whitesell.

Whitesell coached at Elmhurst College before moving to Lewis in
1992. He was previously an assistant at Minnesota State, Wabash
Valley Community College, Ellsworth Community College and North
Dakota.
