Ex-Wyoming coach DeVoe stepping down at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy basketball coach Don DeVoe announced
he will retire after this season, ending a career in which he
recorded more than 500 wins at five schools.

The decision came Monday during a season in which the Midshipmen
are 3-17 overall, 0-7 in the Patriot League and in the midst of an
eight-game losing streak.

"With the dynamics of the situation, I felt like it was the
best time for myself, my family and the Navy basketball team to
retire at the end of this season," said DeVoe, whose 510 career
wins rank 57th in college basketball history and 18th among active
coaches.

DeVoe, in his 12th year as Navy head coach, has posted a 182-155
record with the Midshipmen, taking them to the NCAA tournament
three times. Under his direction, Navy earned at least a share of
five Patriot League regular-season titles, and won the league
tournament three times.

DeVoe is one of only 29 active coaches to lead three different
teams to the NCAA tournament. He has also coached at Virginia Tech,
Tennessee, Wyoming and Florida.

This year, however, has been a struggle -- the Midshipmen have
lost 12 of 13, including a 65-50 defeat against Lafayette on
Sunday.

Navy athletics director Chet Gladchuk said DeVoe's "respected
and supportive commitment to the midshipmen has served as a great
example for many of our coaches and staff to follow.

"His distinguished career spanning a number of institutions
remains impressive and we all wish Don and his family a healthy and
happy next chapter in their lives."

DeVoe's decision to stay until the end of the season was based
on his will to finish what he started with a young team.

"I've never quit on any team in my life and I'm not quitting on
this team as I will remain the head coach the rest of this
season," he said. "But I felt like it was important to announce
it now so everyone can move forward."

DeVoe coached two seasons at Wyoming, going 17-10 in 1976-77 and
12-15 in 1977-78.
