Three National League MVP Awards won by Brooklyn Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella sold for a combined $340,000 in an auction on Saturday.
A pair of cleats worn in Campanella's last game before a car accident in 1958 paralyzed him and prematurely ended his career sold for $22,000. One of his game-used gloves sold for $38,000, while a Brooklyn Dodgers warmup jacket cost the winning bidder $31,000.
"The success of Roy Campanella's collection is a testament to the marketplace and the incredible legacy of the Campanella name," said David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, the Pa.-based auction house that conducted the bidding.
Campanella won the awards in 1951, 1953 and 1955, the only year the Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series. The 1951 award from Campanella's best statistical year, in which he hit .325, smacked 33 home runs and had 108 RBI, sold for $155,000.
Campanella, who played in five World Series throughout his 10-year career and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1969, died in 1993.
All the items in the auction were made available by Campanella's widow, Roxie. Portions of the proceeds will go to the Roy and Roxie Campanella Foundation, which helps support people living with spinal cord injuries.
