EUGENE, Ore. -- Tim Montgomery withdrew from the 100 meters
at the Prefontaine Classic because of Achilles' tendinitis. During workouts this week, the world record holder discovered he
could not sprint all-out without risking greater injury. His spot
in Saturday's race was offered to American J.J. Johnson, who had
the world's sixth-fastest time last year (9.95 seconds). Montgomery set the world mark of 9.78 last September. Also in the race is Dwain Chambers of Britain, who has the
second-fastest time in history (9.87).
