School officials to reevaluate program in one year

MIAMI -- The men's soccer program at Florida International
received a two-year reprieve from school officials, who reversed an
earlier decision to dissolve the program.

The situation will be examined again in one year, school
officials said Monday.

"I will do whatever it takes to keep the dream of men's soccer
alive at FIU," coach Karl Kremser said.

The program was cut Jan. 16 so its $360,000 annual budget could
be allocated to other teams. But school officials said one day
later that they acted without considering the problems players
currently under scholarship might have transferring to other
schools.

FIU won national championships in 1982 and 1984 while competing
at the NCAA Division II level and reached the 1996 NCAA Division I
championship game.
