Alan Smith completes MK Dons move

MK Dons have completed the signing of former England international Alan Smith on a full-time deal after he impressed on loan last season.

Smith, 31, joined on a temporary basis from Newcastle in January and helped steer Karl Robinson's side to the League One play-offs, where they were beaten by Huddersfield Town.

After being released by the Magpies, he has wrapped up a permanent move to stadium:mk on a two-year contract.

"The former Manchester United and England star was a huge hit with the fans during his loan period with the club last season and always expressed his desire to stay at stadium:mk," a statement on the official MK Dons website said.

"After battling against a number of other clubs for Smith's signature, Karl Robinson will be delighted at sealing the permanent signing of his number one summer target."

Smith made his name at hometown club Leeds, where he spent six years and scored 56 goals in 228 appearances. He joined Manchester United for £7 million in 2004 and moved to Newcastle three years later.
