Sergio Perez signs multiyear deal

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates -- Mexican Formula One driver Sergio Perez has signed a multiyear contract extension with the Force India team.

He joined Force India this year after one season with McLaren and secured third place at the Bahrain Grand Prix in April. But since then he has finished no higher than sixth and retired from three races.

Force India announced the new deal in a statement but did specify how long it is for.

Perez, who began his F1 career with Sauber, is 12th in the championship standings ahead of Sunday's season-ending Abu Dhabi GP.

The 24-year-old Perez says, "it's important for me to establish myself in a team and have some continuity. The team have given me a competitive car this year and I believe we can continue to achieve great things together."
