SILVERSTONE, England -- MotoGP world championship leader Marc Marquez held off Jorge Lorenzo in a back-and-forth battle from start to finish to win the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Marquez on his Repsol Honda started the race from pole position, but dropped into second on the opening lap as Movistar Yamaha's Lorenzo took charge.

The lead changed hands between the duo several times after Marquez went in front with seven laps to go.

But Marquez claimed an 11th win of the world championship in 40 minutes, 51.835 seconds. Lorenzo's teammate Valentino Rossi was third.

"I didn't expect Jorge to be like that," Marquez said. "He was so strong from the beginning. The pace was very high ... he was pushing a lot at the start and I was trying to save the tires a little."

With six races to go, Marquez has an 89-point lead in the standings over Dani Pedrosa, who finished fourth at the central England circuit. Rossi is 10 points further back in third, ahead of Lorenzo.

"I made a very good start, the first corner I took first position and I pushed to the maximum and arrived better than ever," Lorenzo told British broadcaster BT Sport. "But it was not enough as, at this moment the Honda is very good even if our bike has improved."
