SEATTLE -- Ryan Villopoto won his hometown AMA Supercross race Saturday night for his second straight victory and fifth of the season.
The Kawasaki rider led all 20 laps in the 450SX event in front of 53,927 fans at CenturyLink Field, easily holding off Suzuki's James Stewart.
"I don't think I've ever raced in front of a crowd cheering me on this loud," said Villopoto, also the Seattle winner as a rookie in 2009. "It's tough to race at home and in the past I haven't been that stellar here, so to have a race like that is awesome."
The three-time defending series champion extended his points lead to 48 over Stewart, also a five-time winner in the first 15 races in the 17-event season. The series will race April 26 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., and finish the season May 3 in Las Vegas.
"I'm not thinking about the championship right now, but it does feel good to have an opportunity to wrap up the title in New York in a couple weeks," Villopoto said.
KTM's Ryan Dungey was third in the race and is third in the standings, 51 points behind.
Honda's Cole Seely won the 250SX Western Regional race, leading all 15 laps for his second victory in the first eight events. KTM's Jason Anderson was second.
Anderson leads the standings, eight points ahead of Seely with only the Las Vegas finale left.
"I'm just trying to stay alive in the points hunt," said Seely, also the 2011 Seattle winner. "I've been solid and he [Anderson] has been solid. ... We were able to put together 15 solid laps. This is where I need to be, so I'm pumped. I'm not thinking about the points. Whatever happens happens. It's been a fun year."
