NHL, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres

BOSTON -- Stephen Weiss and Daniel Cleary scored second-period goals, reserve goalie Jonas Gustavsson made 28 saves in his first action of the season, and the Detroit Red Wings edged the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Monday.

Henrik Zetterberg had the other goal for Detroit (4-2), which won its second straight game.

Loui Eriksson and Milan Lucic scores Boston's goals. The Bruins had a two-man, power-play for nearly 2 minutes early in the third period, but couldn't mount a comeback.

Gustavsson, playing in place of Jimmy Howard, bobbled a few shots in the opening period, but improved as the game went on. He made a pair of stops on Jarome Iginla's shots from the left point when the Bruins had the two-man edge for 1:54 early in the third period.

Tuukka Rask made 24 saves for Boston (3-2).

Lucic's 100th NHL goal cut the Bruins' deficit to 3-2 with 1:20 to play. Boston went 0 for 5 on the power play.

CAPITALS 4, OILERS 2

WASHINGTON -- Joel Ward, Alex Ovechkin and Troy Brouwer scored goals in less than four minutes of the second period, and Washington snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over Edmonton.

With the score tied at 1, Ward took advantage of a power play and scored his first goal of the season at 10:06 of the second.

Ovechkin added his sixth goal 3:12 later, and Brouwer -- during another power play -- netted his first 43 seconds after that. Nicklas Backstrom assisted on all three goals, scored 3:55 apart. Brooks Laich scored Washington's first goal of the game.

The Capitals scored four times on 20 shots against Edmonton goalie Jason LaBarbera. The Oilers have given up at least four goals in each of their six games.

Boyd Gordon and Will Acton, with the first of his NHL career, scored for Edmonton.

WILD 2, SABRES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Jason Pominville scored the winning goal in his return to Buffalo, and Minnesota beat the winless Sabres.

Kyle Brodziak also scored for Minnesota (3-1-2). Josh Harding made 22 saves.

Buffalo (0-6-1) tied a franchise record for longest winless streak to start a season. The Sabres were 0-5-2 in 1999 and 0-4-3 in 1990.

Pominville, a former Sabres captain, played his first game in Buffalo since he was traded to Minnesota last April.

Brian Flynn lifted Buffalo into a 1-1 tie with 4:56 left in the second period, scoring his first goal of the season off an assist from Zemgus Girgensons.

Pominville scored on the power play with 9.7 seconds left in the second period to give Minnesota a 2-1 lead.

Jonas Enroth started in place of No. 1 Sabres goalie Ryan Miller and made 18 saves.
