Austria beats 2012 finalist Slovakia, Czechs win

HELSINKI -- Bernhard Starkbaum made 42 saves before stopping all 3 shots in the shootout and Austria beat 2012 runner-up Slovakia 2- at the ice hockey world championships Friday after.

Austria's Thomas Vanek was the only player to score in a shootout ended by Starkbaum's save to deny Miroslav Satan. Slovakia, France, Austria and Germany can all advance to the playoffs in Helsinki.

In Stockholm, Zbynek Michalek and Jiri Novotny scored on power plays in the third period and the Czech Republic beat Slovenia 4-2.

Jiri Hudler also found the net on a power play for the Czechs, tying the game at 2-2 in the second period with his fourth goal in five games.

Czech goalie Ondrej Pavelec played for the second time and made 23 saves.
