Jets D Jacob Trouba asks for trade, won't go to training camp

Restricted free-agent defenseman Jacob Trouba has requested a trade from the Winnipeg Jets, citing a lack of opportunity with the team.

Trouba will not be attending Jets training camp, his agent, Kurt Overhardt, said Saturday.

Overhardt said no negotiations on a new contract have taken place the past several months.

"The situation is not about money. It is solely about our client having the opportunity to realize his potential as a right-shot NHL defenseman," Overhardt said in a statement.

Kevin Cheveldayoff, the Jets' executive vice president and general manger, responded with a statement Saturday night.

"Over the last three seasons, Jacob Trouba has played a key role for the Winnipeg Jets and in our view still represents an important part of the long-term future of our club," Cheveldayoff said. "As such, any decisions made regarding Jacob Trouba will be made in the best interest of the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club.

"As an unsigned player, we cannot compel Jacob to report to training camp at this time. However, we will continue to work diligently to resolve this matter."

The Trouba camp cited the Jets' depth on defense, especially right-handed shot defensemen, including Dustin Byfuglien and Tyler Myers. Both are signed to long-term contracts.

"Our client has nothing but respect for the people and City of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Jets, its fans, management and ownership. Our desire to get him moved has everything to do with opportunity," Overhardt said.

Trouba was part of Team North America in the World Cup and was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2012 draft. The 22-year-old Rochester, Michigan, native had 21 points in 81 games last season.

"I didn't want it to get to this point," Trouba told TSN. "To not play is not what I want. This has nothing to do with money ... it never has."
