PITTSBURGH -- New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist is day-to-day after leaving Game 1 of the team's first-round playoff series against the Penguins on Wednesday night after being hit with a stick to the face.
Rangers coach Alain Vigneault told reporters on Thursday said Lundqvist had swelling around his right eye and was scheduled to see a specialist. He said Lundqvist's injury isn't "too serious."
With 48.2 seconds left in the first period of a scoreless game, New York defenseman Marc Staal inadvertently struck Lundqvist in the eye area of his mask while defending against a Pittsburgh forward, sending Lundqvist to the ice in agony.
After getting some treatment from the team's training staff, Lundqvist returned to the net but allowed Patric Hornqvist to score the Penguins' first goal just 30.6 seconds later.
Lundqvist, making his 111th consecutive playoff start for New York, remained in the dressing room when the Rangers came out for the second period. He was replaced by backup Antti Raanta, who stopped 16 of 19 shots.
Lundqvist never returned as the Rangers lost 5-2.
The Rangers recalled goaltender Magnus Hellberg from Hartford of the American Hockey League on Thursday. The 25-year-old Hellberg has appeared in two NHL games, including a lackluster period against Washington on Dec. 20 in mop-up duty. Hellberg posted 30-20-3 record, along with a 2.40 goals-against average in 53 games in Hartford.
Penguins netminder Marc-Andre Fleury, meanwhile, did not dress for Game 1, pressing Jeff Zatkoff into duty as the surprise starter.
Fleury has been recovering from his second concussion this season but practiced on Monday and Tuesday. He also took the morning skate Wednesday, leading to the thought that he would return to action for Game 1 of the playoffs.
But when the teams took the ice for the pregame warm-up, the Penguins were led by Zatkoff, who appeared in his first NHL playoff action. He made 35 saves.
Tristan Jarry, who did not even skate Wednesday morning, served as the backup for the Penguins.
Matt Murray, who had been terrific for the Penguins the past two weeks while Fleury was recovering from the concussion, remains injured as well.
One of the top minor league goaltenders in the American Hockey League, Murray was injured in Game 82 of the regular season Saturday afternoon when he collided with Philadelphia's Brayden Schenn. He has not skated since.
