Islanders' Travis Hamonic (knee) out for rest of regular season

NHL, New York Islanders

New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic will miss the rest of the regular season with a right knee injury, coach Jack Capuano said Friday.

Hamonic, 25, suffered the injury in a knee-on-knee collision with Columbus' Scott Hartnell during Thursday's game.

"It's going to keep him out for an extended period of time and we know he's not going to play the remainder of the season," Capuano told reporters. "Hopefully, we'll have a better idea at some point ... Losing (No.) 3 is a big loss for our hockey team. No question about it."

The Islanders would not speculate on Hamonic's status for the playoffs.

"We obviously hope that he'll be back soon," Islanders center John Tavares told reporters. "Everyone's just got to step up and work through the void."

Hamonic, who has five goals and 16 assists this season, sat out last year's playoffs with a torn MCL.
