Jonas Gustavsson medically cleared to resume on-ice activities

NHL, Boston Bruins

Boston Bruins goaltender Jonas Gustavsson has been activated from injured reserve, and he is medically cleared to resume all hockey activities, the team announced Thursday.

"The final testing is complete and all results have been reviewed by the Bruins medical staff. Jonas has been cleared to resume full on-ice participation with the team without any restrictions," the team said in a release.

As a result, backup goaltender Malcolm Subban has been assigned to Providence of the AHL.

Gustavsson, 31, was placed on IR after a brief stint in the hospital last week because of an elevated heart rate. He was removed from a game after the first period on Jan. 26 because of illness and transported to Massachusetts General Hospital. He was admitted overnight for observation. Preliminary tests came back negative and he was discharged the next afternoon.

Gustavsson had surgeries in 2010 and 2011 for an abnormal heart rhythm when he was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Boston signed the veteran netminder during the offseason to serve as the backup for starter Tuukka Rask. In 15 games this season, Gustavsson is 9-3-1 with a 2.38 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage.

The Bruins face the Buffalo SabresĀ on Thursday night at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York.
