Wild captain Mikko Koivu taken to hospital after crashing into boards

Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu was taken to a hospital in Columbus after he got tangled up with the Blue Jackets' David Savard and crashed awkwardly into the boards in the first period of Tuesday night's 4-2 win.

The Wild said after the game that the hospital trip was precautionary, and Koivu flew home with the team.

Coach Mike Yeo said he was "very hopeful" the undisclosed injury wouldn't impact Koivu long-term, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Koivu slid into the boards on his right side, with his back taking the brunt of the collision. He also appeared to hit his head. He was able to leave the ice under his own power.

Koivu, 32, leads the Wild with 32 points and 22 assists this season.
