Why Cory Schneider should start for Team USA at the World Cup

NHL, New Jersey Devils

With the 2016 World Cup of Hockey less than 12 months away, roster construction is well underway for all eight clubs. There are plenty of projected lineups already out there, and most of those list the same three names as candidates to man the crease for the American team: Jonathan Quick, Ben Bishop and Cory Schneider.

Ryan Miller, the 2010 Olympic hero, is probably no longer a realistic option, and Craig Anderson and Jimmy Howard are probably both well behind in the race to make the team. Of course, we still have almost an entire NHL season to play, and plenty can change.

Essentially, everyone views Quick as the starter for Team USA, with Bishop filing in as the No. 2 and Schneider as the third option. If the American brass decides to go that way, they could be making a mistake. Schneider -- the projected third-stringer -- is very arguably the best starting option of the three.
