Florida Panthers re-sign Jonathan Huberdeau to 2-year deal

The Florida Panthers re-signed center Jonathan Huberdeau to a two-year deal worth $6.5 million Thursday.

A source told ESPN's Pierre LeBrun that the deal is worth $2.5 million this season and $4 million next season.

Huberdeau led the Panthers with 54 points last season. Panthers general manager Dale Tallon said the deal is "very fair" for both sides.

"Fantastic," Tallon said. "I'm real happy for Huby and real happy for our team. It's good to have everything settled. Sometimes it takes longer than others, but I was confident we'd get it done. It was just a matter of time. You get no extra points for doing it sooner or later, but the good news is he's here and he'll be ready to go."

Huberdeau, who had been working out in Montreal, was arriving later Thursday for preseason physicals and will be on the ice for the first practice Friday morning.

He shared his excitement about his new deal on Twitter:

He finished last season on a line with Jaromir Jagr and Aleksander Barkov. In 58 games prior to Jagr's arrival, Huberdeau had 33 points. In the 21 games after Jagr joined the Panthers, he had 21 points -- 6 goals and 15 assists.

The 22-year-old was the third overall selection in the 2011 draft.
