Isles add backup G Thomas Greiss

NHL, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins

The New York Islanders have signed goaltender Thomas Greiss to a two-year contract.

The deal averages $1.5 million per year, a source confirmed to ESPN.com.

Greiss, 29, who was a backup for the Pittsburgh Penguins last season, will presumably back up Isles starting netminder Jaroslav Halak. The German-born netminder was 9-6-3 for the Pens last season, posting a 2.59 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage.

Michal Neuvirth, acquired by the Isles at the trade deadline in March, has decided to test the market as an unrestricted free agent.
