Avalanche sign Carl Soderberg to five-year deal

The Colorado Avalanche have signed Carl Soderberg to a five-year deal worth an average of $4.75 million per season after acquiring the center's negotiating rights in a pre-draft trade with the Boston Bruins.

According to a source, the contract includes a full no-trade clause in the first two years of the deal and a limited no-trade clause in the final three seasons. Soderberg made $1 million last season with the Bruins.

In exchange, the Bruins received a sixth-round pick in 2016.

The 29-year-old forward played 161 regular-season games for the Bruins and posted 29 goals and 65 assists for 94 points. He also played in 14 playoff games for Boston with one goal and five assists for six points.

Originally selected by the St. Louis Blues in the second round (No. 49 overall) in the 2004 NHL entry draft, Soderberg was acquired by the Bruins in exchange for goaltender Hannu Toivonen on July 23, 2007.

Soderberg spent seven seasons playing in Sweden before he arrived in Boston during the 2013 lockout-shortened season. He never lived up to expectations, and it wasn't long before new Bruins GM Don Sweeney decided to move on.

The NHL draft is Friday.
