Senators extend Mark Stone, Mika Zibanejad

NHL, Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators got down to business ahead of a busy draft weekend, signing two of their top youngsters in Calder Trophy finalist Mark Stone and Mika Zibanejad on Thursday.

The 23-year-old Stone, who had 26 goals and led all rookies in scoring with 64 points, agreed to a three-year extension with an average annual value of $3.5 million. He will make $2.25 million next season, followed by $3.75 million in 2016-17 and $4.5 million during the final year of the deal.

Zibanejad, who scored 20 goals and had 46 points this season, agreed to a two-year deal with an average annual value of $2.625 million.

Stone, a sixth-round selection in the 2010 draft, led all NHL rookies in plus-minus (plus-21) and was tied for the league lead with 98 takeaways. He capped the season with a nine-game point streak, including two goals in the Senators' finale.

Both players are represented by Newport Sports.

Florida's Aaron Ekblad won the Calder on Wednesday, becoming the youngest defenseman to win the award since Bobby Orr in 1967.

The Sens may make more headlines before the weekend is over, as the team is reportedly looking to trade a goaltender, likely Robin Lehner, given their surplus at the position.
