Sidney Crosby to appear at world championship

NHL, Pittsburgh Penguins

Sidney Crosby's season isn't over just yet. The superstar center has accepted an invitation to play for Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship in Prague.

It will be a second trip to the worlds for the two-time Olympic gold medalist.

"Any time you can represent Canada, it's an honor," Crosby said. "I looked at the roster Hockey Canada has put together, and I'm excited about the opportunity we have to win gold."

Crosby's Pittsburgh Penguins were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs in the first round by the New York Rangers on Friday.

He joins a squad that already includes the likes of Claude Giroux, Nathan MacKinnon, Matt Duchene, Tyler Seguin, Ryan O'Reilly, Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Jason Spezza.

Crosby played for Team Canada at the 2006 world championship in Latvia. He had a tournament-high 16 points as Canada finished fourth.

Canada, which is seeking its first gold medal at the world championship since 2007, plays its first game Friday vs. Latvia.
