Jaromir Jagr re-signs with Panthers

NHL, Florida Panthers

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Jaromir Jagr and the Florida Panthers have agreed to a one-year contract on the first day of the team's offseason.

Jagr had six goals and 12 assists in 20 games with the Panthers after arriving in a trade with New Jersey on Feb. 26. General manager Dale Tallon said Sunday that Jagr will receive a base salary of about $3.5 million next season, with the possibility of incentives.

"He's a great role model for our guys," Tallon said. "It's a great day for our franchise having a superstar in the fold like that."

Jagr said playing on a line with budding stars Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau has made him feel revitalized and that he is already excited about Florida's possibilities next season, even though the Panthers missed the playoffs for the 13th time in 14 years.

"I'm glad I got traded here," Jagr said. "I didn't know how good this team is and how good the organization is. Thankful I had a chance to play the last 20 games here. A lot of people thought I was done, but those young guys give me extra energy, extra life."

The 43-year-old Jagr has 722 goals and 1,080 assists in his career. His 1,802 points are fourth in NHL history, behind only Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Gordie Howe.

The Panthers did improve by 25 points in the standings over a year ago. They have a young core of talent that's now proven, an elite goalie in Roberto Luongo and now Jagr back.

"This team's got a big future," Jagr said. "Hopefully I can be part of it."
